After 35 years building and repairing boats, and helping many others with project boats I started to realize there was something missing from all of the repair books and articles I have read. Not that most of this information was not good far from it. It just seemed there was always something missing. It seemed to me there was more to all this than learning how to do a good dove tail or how to trouble shoot a 12 volt system.

Welcome to the site. I hope you enjoy your visit. Things are starting to come together slowly but surly. Please take the time to become a member and make some posts. This is a community site set up for those working on project boats (and what boat is not a project) to share and exchange information, ideas, and lend moral support.
New content is being added all the time so check back often. I plan to Make this one of the more useful boat repair/restoration sites. I hope to get other marine professionals to contribute as well.

It seems most people I know with project boats never really set out saying “I’m going to find an old wreck of a boat and fix it up” It is often a matter of running into an old boat that you simply fall in love with, or a buddy has, or knows of this “really good deal.” Others have it in mind that they can find a good hurricane damaged boat, fix her up and be off in no time. Whatever your reason there are some important things you need to be aware of when thinking about laying down your hard earned money on a project boat.

Like it or not winter is coming. As much as I hate the thought of no more boating for several months the reality is we must soon get ready for the cold weather. Even those of us who are lucky enough to live in an area where we do not get much snow and little if any harbor ice, we must still take precautions for the coming winter months. In some ways we need to be more careful than our neighbors in the North because we are not always as well prepared for those sudden cold snaps. The following recommendations should help you in getting ready for the winter months

Most modern boats over about 25 feet are now equipped with some sort of shore power system. These systems add convenience and comfort to your boating experience but they can also bring hidden dangers. Your boats shore power is potentially the most dangerous equipment you have onboard. The real danger is in that you cannot always see, smell, or feel the danger. However there are some simple tests we can make to make sure our system is safe and stays that way.

If there ever was a key to the success of any project boat it is surely Persistence. There will be days and weeks where you feel like you are making no progress or worse yet going backwards. The trick is not to get discouraged and give up. You need to keep moving even if it does not feel like you will ever reach the end. One of the biggest mistakes I see is the guy who leaps in and has untold enthusiasm only to quickly fade and give up early. A project boat is not a race or contest it is a journey and must be taken one step at a time.

Setting goals is easy…… keeping them not so. I think the biggest mistake most people make is to set their goals too broad too big. This has always been a mistake of mine and the cause of some of my biggest failures. Not that I like to admit to failures….. let’s just call them deviations from the goals. When you set your goals too broad or too grand they become that much more difficult to achieve.

The first step in any restoration, or repair project is to remove the old part or parts requiring replacement. At first this would seem a simple task just get out the tools and have at it. But we all know nothing is that simple when it comes to boats and the truth of the matter is removal of the old parts can have allot to do the success or failure of a project.

I am finally seeing green, I have joined the trend, the masses and since am on the immaculate path of being considered one of the hip urban dwellers I had no choice but to be all green. My son does not agree, actually snickered and then laughed when I said was hip now but I wasn’t listening, I was proud nonetheless. Going green has shifted to the mai

If you’re like me you are always looking for ways to save money on your boat, but we still need all the bits and pieces to keep our boats nice and the occasional new toys. With rising costs this seems to get harder all the time, things never get cheaper! I have found one way to save money is to buy my boat parts though eBay’s online auction service.
