Shore water

Now that I am living on board I decided to hook up shore water. It was not hard really I just tee'd into the water line at the pressure or expansion tank and ran a tube up to the stern of the boat. As I do not have a shore fitting to install yet I just ran the tube thru one of the aft cowl vents and installed a tube to garden hose setup. I originally had a Perko in line regulator but it froze and cracked this weekend the first weekend I have had this set up lol. Ok so first problem.
I used 2 Wema senders I got on ebay and a VDO fuel gauge for the guage part.
The VDO reads backwards so I will have to keep an eye out on EBay for a good deal on a water gauge. I used a toggle switch to switch between port and starboard tanks. Works good so far and it is nice to know how much water I have in the tanks. You see they turn the water off here every time we get a hard freeze so I have to switch between using the tanks and using shore water. Which brings me to the other part of this project and that is setting up a method of filling the tank with shore water hooked up. I tee'd into the cold water off the
head cold sink fitting. I tapped in here because it was close to the lines for starboard tank. At first I tapped into the vent line thinking it would vent through the fill (they are both on the top of the tank) In theory this would work as long as the fill cap is open, but for some reason the tank started making too much noise so rather than risk damaging the tank by over pressurizing it I tapped into the fill fitting near the deck plate.
This should be just like putting a hose in the fill plate to fill it and as both tanks are connected it will fill both tanks at the same time. It is nice to have shore water as well as being able to fill the tank. I worry about the shore water if a line should let go for some reason it would just fill the boat. I would like to think the bilge pump/s could keep up with that but not sure I want to test that. I may just leave the shore water off at the dock and only turn it on when i want to fill the tanks. Of couse this would be just like sticking a hose in the fill and leaving it there till the tanks needed filling. Hmmm something to be said for keeping things simple. Well I will use the shore water nad just get in the habit of turning it off everytime I leave the boat.
