String Theory?

Rate this Entry
The theory as I understand it in quantum physics is that the universe is all connected through sting energy. This means that anything that happens in one part of the universe affects all parts of the universe. Interesting theory but what the hell does that have to do with project boats you may ask? Well I will endeavor to explain.
Having recently had a parting of the ways with my appendix, it deciding it no longer liked me and wanting out I have been recovering from the required surgery. Not being physically up to any big jobs I decided to do some light maintenance. The boats AC unit had not been performing the way I thought it should and seemed to be losing its ability to keep me nice and cool in the summer heat. I thought maybe it was due for some simple maintenance, you know clean the air filters and such. Easy enough I thought. I took the stove out to can access to the air filters. Ok I know most people do not have to remove the stove to do this but this was my design when I installed it. It was a good way to hide the air intake. Having cleaned all the filters with compressed air and vacuumed out the dust from the surrounding area I was still not happy with the performance. It was a bit better but not like it should be. While laying in the bunk recovering from the afore mentioned appendix removal I noticed the sound of trickling water and noted the water flow from the through hull was no longer a stream but a dribble. Ok clean the intake strainer no big deal. While doing this I noticed the hose from the strainer to the pump was a bit collapsed from the suction. As the water flow did not improve I thought the next step would be to replace the collapsed hose maybe that would help. So off to get the new hose. Once back I removed the old hose cut the new one and started to install it. At this point one of the fittings decided to break. Ok I can handle that after all there was a stub sticking out so all I had to do was remove it with the pliers. Without getting in the gory details 2 hours later I had the new hose in place. Turn everything on, still just a trickle. Ok now I am losing my sense of humor. This was supposed to be an easy job right? Now I am pulling fittings and hose connections looking for a blockage. None to be found. The pump was more than happy to spray me in the face with a healthy flow of water so why was there just a trickle at the AC end? It worked before why not now? As a last resort I drag out a section of ¾” hose and bypass the ½” hose installed. Eureka! It works! Ok now pull the ½” hose out of the bilge and install the ¾” hose. Another 2 hours and a some blood loss and everything is as it should be, and I can enjoy the cool comfort of my labors.
So how does this explain string theory? Well in a way it does. Starting a simple project is not as it seems, you are forced to follow a path of cause and effect till you find the end. Surely this is something we have no control over and can only go along for the ride till we feel we reach a point where we are satisfied or we simply give up. This day being fairly typical of any project large or small undertaken in search of setting the world to an order we are pleased with. Either that or the pain meds are making me see too much into a typical day on the boat. And we do this why? Oh right for the enjoyment!
