Hi Jiles I was wondering about do that. Your right the cost of a paint job is out of sight. Did the paint smooth out ok with this method? Would love to see some pictures
My 1980 Endeavour 32 was really showing her age topside. Talking to friends I decided haveing the hull painted would be the easiest way to make things better. I knew I had the skills needed to paint the bottom with anti-fouling but I was scared to tackle the topsides. After talking with the owner of the marina where I had the boat hauled to paint the bottom, I reallized I could possibly find the courage to attempt the job myself. What prompted me into do-it-myself mode was his quote of 8 to 10 thousand dollars. I started by giving the hull a good scrubdown with comet cleanser. After that I sanded with 220 grit paper. I then sprayed the hull off with a water hose and dried it well. Next came a rub down with denatured alcohol applied with a low lent cloth. After wipeing everything down with a tack cloth I was as ready as ever to start painting. I chose Brightsides paint thinned with 333 thinner. I enlisted a friend to help as this part really is a two man job. While I rolled the paint on with a low nap roller, my friend smoothed it out in up and down strokes ( to prevent sagging ) with a high quality badger hair brush. I feel the finished project looks fine and now I feel I can do the deck.
